This time of year seems to be full of 100 mile races, as runners test what they've built this summer. Whether you aspire to the 100 mile distance or you simply enjoy watching and supporting others in their antics, there are more 100+ mile races out there than ever and last weekend was full of them. Considering one for yourself? There are plenty to choose from and we rounded up several in last week's social media post on Seven 100-mile Mountain Races. If you're thinking about taking on the 100 mile distance next season, we recommend reading over "How to not DNF a 100-miler" by runner and writer Heather Balogh Rochfort.
In this week's newsletter, we bring you some wisdom from our friend Semi-Rad, then Brendan Leonard himself joins Corrine Malcolm on this week's episode of The Trailhead Podcast.
THE WEEKEND COOL DOWN
Running filmmaker Billy Yang fought jetlag to complete the Wasatch Front 100 (šø:1) after a packed trip to Chamonix to complete the TMB and capturing athlete footage at UTMB.
Mogollon Monster 100 took place in Arizona over the weekend. Aravaipa Running team member Pete Mortimer (šø:2) took first place and the men's top 3 all went under 24 hours for the first time on this course.
Walmsley & Dauwalter Rule UTMB, Semi-Rad and Baked Beans
In this episode, Buzz and Corrine marvel over Jim Walmsley, Courtney Dauwalter, and Zach Millerās performances at UTMB.
Then, Corrine talks with artist Brendan Leonard about his ultimate trail race. It includes Dropbag Jeff and all the French toast. You can see Brendanās illustrations on UltraSignup.
Buzz chats with two callers. First, he speaks with Mark from Minnesota. They agree that baked beans are not ideal running fuel. Then Buzz and Laura from Portland talk about ultrarunning after cancer treatment.
Hi, Iām Cat Bradley and I used to hate wearing sunglasses. Iād have to take them off all the time: under shady trees (they were too dark), bombing downhills (I couldnāt see all the ruts and roots), and after hours on the trail (Iād get headaches from having them on too long: kind of a problem for an ultra-runner). I was stoked when Method Seven asked me to help design the first-ever trail-running-specific lenses. Thanks to advanced notch filtering and never-done-before trail-optimized contrast-enhancing polarization, these lenses give me insane amounts of light and incredible contrast. I literally never take them off and forget theyāre on my face.
Iām so proud of these lenses and the three ultra-lightweight frames weāve launched since we started this dream project of mine (including the just-released Silverton). Weāre offering $75 off all TRAIL glasses (code ULTRASIGNUP) through September 15th. Plus, if you havenāt already, join Method Sevenās newsletter for a chance to win a race entry of your choice of up to $250 (one entry per person).
