What a time to be a trail runner. It seems like every week the sport grows in new and interesting ways. And this week was no different, with Tim Tollefson bringing his vision of a Mammoth Trail Fest to life and Dylan Bowman expanding FreeTrail's offerings.

The future is bright.

For our featured article this week we check in with Allie “Mac” McLaughlin in the midst of a stellar racing season. And in the DFL, we emerge from a momentary lack of resolve as determined as a racoon.

More than 700 runners arrived at the Mammoth Trail Fest this weekend for educational events, community, and trail running across the top of California. Three days offered three events (four if you count the kids race! 📸: 1): 26km, 50km, and a Dragon’s Back Ascent. In Arizona, Jubilee Paige captures a 50-mile runner on the Sky Peaks course (📸: 3).

In FKT News: 17 minutes 25 seconds is all it took for Remi Bonnet to run the famous Manitou Incline, which travels 2,000 feet uphill in 1.1 miles on Pikes Peak. 😱 (📸: 2)

Why You Should Use Poles on Your Next Trail Run
Courtney Dauwalter climbing with poles.

The best mountain runners know, poles are vital to covering a ton of vert fast. When the terrain gets steep, it can be more efficient to bring your arms into the equation.

The technique, long used by ski mountaineers, utilizes the muscles of your back and arms to help propel you upward. In technical terrain, they also help with balance and can give you more points of contact when you are bombing descents. Make yourself a quadruped to save your quads.

For many of us the beautiful solitude of running big mountain miles in remote places is what the summer signifies. As we bid farewell to the hotter months, our September selection is a photo from professional mountain sport photographer, Dan Patitucci, whose team spent three weeks this year getting to know the trails in this region of Switzerland in an effort to add a mini-guide to their “Elevation : The Alps Trail & Peak Running Resource.”

“One of our favorite trails was here, in the Savognin, above Val Surses,” he says, “names you likely haven't heard of, but really ought to get to know."
